Photographing a crazy happy couple as they tie the knot is something I do fairly often, being a wedding photographer and all, yet it NEVER feels repetitive or dull. Each occasion and every couple has their own unique story and so many working parts, that every wedding feels distinctly individual and my job is to bottle that up!

In the case of Gemma and Matthew, there was a lot to fall in love with. Being a Coastie, the beach is a very familiar location to me, but the atmosphere around Caves Beach felt entirely electric. The story of how they met, which starts with Matt hitting his future bride-to-be in the face with a ball at CrossFit and ends with him unknowingly making her favourite (Mexican) food on their first date, is one of those stories that is so cute and wholesome that it almost feels straight out of a rom-com! A surprise proposal at Christmas 2018 led them to be engaged on Caves Beach, Gemma’s favourite spot in the world and also the very same place they would be getting married, at Caves Beach Surf Life Saving Club.

When I asked them what their “spark” was, the momentum behind their love as a couple, the answer was concise and clear; they are each other's opposite. Gemma described her partner as “the ying to my yang” and that despite their differences, they just work. I ask all my clients this question so I can try and focus on bringing this out during the shoot, but with Gemma and Matt I didn’t really have to try! Their chemistry just bubbles to life when they’re together and I think it’s really evident from the photos of that day. 

Gemma’s favourite things about her husband are his eyes and loving personality. For Matt, it’s his wife’s smile. Together, they light up the room, and made this photoshoot so enjoyable for me to experience as their photographer.
